Goblet cells are specialized mucus-secreting cells in mucosal epithelia. Their main job is to produce mucin, which they store in secretory granules and then release into the lumen by exocytosis. Once released, the mucin hydrates to form mucus, a protective, lubricating gel that coats and shields the surface from mechanical damage, pathogens, and desiccation. This secretion is the key protective mechanism at mucosal surfaces, which is why “secrete mucus” is the best answer. They do not primarily absorb nutrients, and mucus transport is accomplished by other structures and mechanisms (like cilia or peristaltic movement), not by goblet cells themselves.
